# Switches

> The three switches under What NextIntent may do: the app embed, Messages, and the On-page card. What each one does, what changes when it is off, and what it costs.

The first section of Settings, **What NextIntent may do**, holds the switches. Nothing is shown to a shopper unless Messages are on. The app embed and the card are the two halves of getting a sentence onto the page.

## App embed

**Where:** shown here as done or not; switched in your theme editor at **Online Store → Themes → Customize → App embeds → NextIntent**. The **Open theme editor** button goes there.

**On:** "Visits are arriving from your storefront." The script is loading on your pages and the app is reading visits.

**Off:** nothing is read. No moments, no reasons, no money, in either mode. The line reads "Off" with the path to switch it on.

## Messages

**Where:** the **Turn on** / **Turn off** button.

**On (active mode):** "Live. Stuck shoppers can be spoken to." A sentence is shown to stuck shoppers, except the held-back share. Credited orders are billed. The first time you turn it on, Shopify's approval page opens for the plan.

**Off (watch mode):** "Off. Watch mode: we record what we would have said and show nothing." Free.

**While paused at the cap:** the button is there but turning Messages on is refused until the cap is raised, because active mode with no room under the cap would speak without being able to bill. Raise the cap under Billing and Messages come back on their own.

## On-page card

**Where:** the second **Turn on** / **Turn off** button.

**On:** "One sentence from your facts, once per visit." When the app speaks, it does so with its own card on the page.

**Off:** "The sentence a stalled shopper sees." The app's own card is not drawn. If **How to speak on the page** is set to your popup tool or a browser event, those still work; if it is set to the card, nothing is shown even with Messages on.

**When to turn it off:** you use your own popup tool for the sentence (see [What it may say](/shopify/settings/what-it-may-say)), or your developer handles the browser event. Otherwise leave it on.

## Held back

The fourth line in this section is the held-back share. It has its own page: [Held back share](/shopify/settings/held-back-share).

## The two switches together

| Messages | Card | What a stuck shopper sees |
| - | - | - |
| Off | Any | Nothing. Watch mode. |
| On | On | The card, once, when stuck (unless held back) |
| On | Off, output is popup or event | Your popup, or whatever your code does with the event |
| On | Off, output is card | Nothing. Turn the card on. |

## Why two switches

Messages is the decision to speak; the card is one way of speaking. Stores with an existing popup tool wanted the sentence delivered through it, and stores with a developer wanted the raw event. Keeping the decision and the delivery separate means the billing rule ("a sentence was shown") is the same whichever way the sentence reached the screen.
