# Held back share

> The setting that decides what share of stuck shoppers NextIntent leaves alone for the comparison on Money: the three choices, the ramp on new stores, and how to pick.

**Held back** is the fourth line under **Settings → What NextIntent may do**. It sets the share of stuck shoppers who are never spoken to, so Money can compare what they buy with what the shoppers who saw a sentence buy. The idea is explained on [Held back to compare](/shopify/how-it-works/held-back); this page is about the setting itself.

## The choices

| Setting | Of 100 stuck shoppers | When to use it |

| 5% | 5 held back, 95 spoken to | Once the comparison is established and you want the fewest shoppers left alone |
| 10% (default) | 10 held back, 90 spoken to | The steady state for most stores |
| 20% | 20 held back, 80 spoken to | While the comparison is still filling in, or after a big change |

The choice takes effect for the next shopper. Shoppers already assigned to a group in the current visit keep it.

## The ramp

Every store starts at 20% until 30 shoppers have been held back, whatever the setting shows. Money needs 30 shoppers in each group before it shows the comparison, and on a store with 40 stuck shoppers a week a 5% share would take four months to get there. At 20% it takes about a week. Once 30 have been held, your setting applies. The Settings note says so: "New stores start at 20% until 30 shoppers have been held."

## What it costs

Held-back shoppers still buy on their own; Money shows their rate. What you give up is the difference between that rate and the spoken-to rate, on the held-back share. On a store where 8% of held-back shoppers buy and 14% of spoken-to shoppers buy, holding back 10 of 100 shoppers costs about 0.6 orders. What you get is a comparison you can show anyone, including yourself.

## In watch mode

The setting has no effect while Messages are off, because nobody is spoken to and everyone is left alone. It applies the moment you turn Messages on.
