# The app embed

> The one theme switch that puts NextIntent on your storefront: what it loads, what it costs the page, and how to turn it on or off.

The app embed is the single switch in your theme editor that puts NextIntent on your storefront. It is on or off for the whole store. Nothing is pasted into your theme code, and turning it off removes everything the app adds to your pages.

## Where it is

**Online Store → Themes → Customize → App embeds → NextIntent.** Switch it on and press **Save**. The app's **Home → Finish setup** section has an **Open theme editor** button that takes you straight there.

The embed is per theme. If you publish a new theme, turn it on there too. The app's Home page tells you when visits stop arriving.

## What it loads

Three small pieces, all on every storefront page:

1. **The NextIntent script.** Loaded from `sdk.nextintent.ai`, after the page, marked async so the page never waits for it. It reads how the shopper moves: scrolling, pausing, clicking, going back, and the form messages your theme shows (a declined code, for example). It sends those readings to NextIntent as they happen.
2. **The cart reporter.** On pages with a cart it reports what is in the cart (item handles, quantities, prices, the total, and whether a discount code was accepted). The code itself never leaves the page: the page hashes it first and sends the hash. The reporter also stamps a NextIntent visitor id on the cart as a hidden attribute, so the order that follows can be matched to the moment.
3. **The card.** Once the visitor id is known, the page asks NextIntent every six seconds, for the first fifteen minutes of a visit and only while the tab is visible, whether one sentence is waiting for this shopper. ## What it costs the page

The script is loaded asynchronously and does not block rendering. The card's check is one small request every six seconds while the tab is in front, and stops after fifteen minutes or as soon as a card has been shown. There are no images, fonts or stylesheets loaded until a card is shown, and the card's own styling is a few lines inlined in the page.

## Why a theme embed and not a pasted script

Merchants in the cart-recovery category complain about scripts left behind after an uninstall and about apps that slow the store. A theme app embed is Shopify's own mechanism for this: it is on or off in one place, Shopify removes it when the app is uninstalled, and the theme code is never edited. It also means the site id is read from an app-owned metafield, so there is nothing to type and nothing to get wrong.

## Turning it off

Switch the embed off in the theme editor and save. The script stops loading on the next page view. Existing data in the app stays; the Home page shows "Off" under App embed until you turn it back on. Turning the embed off is not the same as watch mode: in watch mode the app still reads visits and records what it would have said; with the embed off it reads nothing.
