# The cap

> The monthly cap you approve in Shopify: what it is, how to change it, the warning at 80%, and what the app does when the month's charges reach it.

The cap is the most NextIntent can charge you in a month. You approve it in Shopify when you turn active mode on, and you can change it any time on **Settings → Billing**. When the month's charges reach the cap, the app pauses active mode on its own and tells you what the pause is costing.

## Where it is

**Settings → Billing** shows the plan, this month's usage as "\$83 of \$250 this cycle" with a bar, and a **Monthly cap** field with **Change cap**. The bar is green, turns amber past 80%, and red when paused.

## Changing it

1. Type the new amount in **Monthly cap** (between \$25 and \$100,000) and press **Change cap**.
2. Shopify's approval page opens at the top of the window with the new cap. Approve it.
3. You are back on Settings with the new cap shown. If the store was paused and the new cap is higher than the one it paused at, active mode resumes at once with the switches exactly as they were.

Raising the cap does not charge anything. It only raises the ceiling.

## The warning at 80%

When this month's charges pass 80% of the cap, Settings and Home show a warning: "You are at 84% of your cap. At this pace it runs out around the 22nd. When it does, active mode pauses until you raise it." The date is an estimate from the month's pace so far. The weekly brief carries the same line. See [The brief](/shopify/reports/brief).

This is the moment to raise the cap if you want the app to keep speaking. A cap reached on the 22nd means eight days of stuck shoppers left alone.

## When the cap is reached

1. The next charge that would pass the cap is not sent. The app records it as capped.
2. Active mode pauses: Messages go off and the app remembers your switches.
3. Home and Settings show: "Your cap is reached. Active mode is paused. Since \[time], 34 stalled shoppers would have been spoken to. Going by this store, about 5 of them would have bought, roughly \$360. Raise the cap to pick them up."
4. The counts keep rising while paused, so you can see what the pause costs.

See [Pause and resume](/shopify/billing/pause-and-resume) for exactly how the pause lifts.

## Picking a cap

A cap is a ceiling, not a target, so set it above what a good month would cost. From the example on [Pricing](/shopify/billing/pricing): a store expecting around \$8,000 of credited orders a month pays about \$400, so a \$600 cap leaves room for a strong month. A store that has just turned active mode on can read its first two weeks on Money and set the cap from that.

The default of \$250 is deliberately modest: a new store should hit the cap and see the pause message before it sees a large invoice, and raise the cap from a position of knowing what the app earns.
